Retail Negotiating Going Up

Printer-friendly versionSend to friendPDF version

According to a survey by the market-research firm Research Group, 72% of American consumers reported negotiating over a retail purchase in the past four months. This is up from a year earlier when only 56% of respondents reported they had done so. Britt Beemer, Research Group's CEO estimates they succeed 80% of the time.

An article about the survey in The Economist added that while Americans have a long history of bargain hunting, negotiating with retail outlets here is a more recent phenomenon. And retailers ranging from New York's Plaza Hotel to Nordstrom are reportedly more open to negotiating as a short-term way to increase sales.
