Improve Your Negotiations With The 5 Golden Rules.   LEARN THEM

Like millions of others, I have been amazed at the resources and power that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought to everyone in so many fields. And while some legitimately feel threatened by this ongoing revolutionary change (and which I partially address in my Will AI Replace Human Negotiators column), it’s also crucial to examine how AI can help all of us in our negotiations.

Here are three main ways we all can use AI to improve our negotiation results. I address the first in Part One and the remaining two next week.

I am also basing this on general AI resources like ChatGPT and Copilot, not on personalized negotiation AI coaching and training chatbots (for a discussion of these, see the Harvard Program on Negotiation’s recent newsletter “From Agent to Advisor: How AI is Transforming Negotiation” summarizing these resources from its 2025 AI Negotiation Summit.)

1. Incredibly efficient tool to help develop Strategic Negotiation Plans.

I have been preaching for years the value of developing Strategic Negotiation Plans in advance of negotiations based on my Five Golden Rules of Negotiation. But it’s tough to get significant adoption. Developing these Plans takes time, effort, and knowledge of these proven strategic principles.

But the value is incredible, as the strategies you develop in these Plans will be based on solid negotiation research.

AI can help you develop these Plans. A lot!

How? Ask AI to help you fill in the blanks of your Strategic Negotiation Plan (E-mail me at Info@LatzNegotiation.com if you want a Strategic Negotiation Plan Template with strategic and tactical elements to include).

Let’s say you want to negotiate a raise. The first element of your Strategic Negotiation Plan involves setting your short- and long-term goals and interests. Ask AI – what might be my short- and long-term goals and fundamental interests in negotiating a raise from my current employer? (This is an element of my First Golden Rule: Information is Power-So Get It!).

Then consider which responses fit your individual situation the best and include them in your Plan.

Or let’s say you’re about to put your house up for sale and are working with your real estate agent to develop your Strategic Negotiation Plan. Ask AI what factors to consider in determining how aggressively to set your list price/first offer in a negotiation to sell your house in the Minneapolis market in December 2025 (a component of my Fourth Golden Rule: Design an Offer-Concession Strategy).

Or if you’re looking to buy a second home in Scottsdale for the winter, ask AI to evaluate the real estate market for second homes in the Scottsdale area at this time (an element of my Third Golden Rule: Employ “Fair” Objective Criteria).

Then evaluate and consider including this in your Plan and use it to help you negotiate.

One final example. Let’s say you’re a lawyer and a significant client is considering moving its business to another law firm. As a result, they’ve requested a significant discount on your and your associates’ rates for some ongoing business disputes (this is an element of my Second Golden Rule: Maximize Your Leverage).

Ask AI – what should I do in a negotiation to maximize my leverage if my law firm client has requested a reduced rate on business deals and is considering moving its business to one of my competitors?

Consider its responses and then enter the best one into your Strategic Negotiation Plan.

Latz’s Lesson: AI is an incredible resource you can use to improve your negotiation results, initially by helping you develop more comprehensive and effective Strategic Negotiation Plans.
